Hello! Hello and welcome back to the Gaming Blender Podcast. The podcast of hypothetical video games where every fortnight Matthew and I make a hypothetical video game. Of course I am here with the aforementioned Matthew. Matthew how are you? Hello, it's lovely to be here. I'd like to thank everyone who's got me here to this point. I'd like to I genuinely can't think of anyone to thank now. I thought this joke off the cuff and all of sudden, God, you weren't prepared at all. Yeah. You didn't prepare this joke. But nice speech. I think the shepard hook would go on the stage to haul you off. had enough time. I heard that, please, please tell us if this is incorrect. Apparently, Adrian Brody's Oscar acceptance speech from this year was one of the most boring and ongoing. I haven't seen it. did you? Like the film? and then you thought he's finished no he's not he's still going one they take a big pause ago. And because of that, and looks down at the award, the bit where they look down at the award is always the bit where I think they're wrapping up now because it's the enormity and it goes, and this is how I got to where I am today. Thank you so much. But you look at the award and go, this award is shaped like a person. This reminds me I need to thank people. Yes, I know. It's Yeah, I did watch it and it was... It did take a long time. As much as I like Adrian Brody as an actor, I think he's good actor, I think he did take a little bit too long. But anyway, this is not a podcast about Adrian Brody or indeed the Oscars or indeed about film. For new listeners, welcome, this is the Gaming Blender podcast. Every week Matthew and I design a hypothetical... a theoretical video game using a randomised genre and couple of randomised mechanics and at the end we shoehorn in a narrative at the end all in about half an hour with of course a good 5-10 minutes of us rabbiting on Matthew, your gaming recently, how's it been going? I, you know very well, we've been playing, we are playing the bejesus out of hell, hell, I got the name wrong. And the irony, the irony to this, the irony of this is you told me the other day, you were like, it's a rubbish name for the game. And I went, yeah, it's fine. It's okay. Yeah, I see. It's a great name. And then immediately when I've essentially been doing advertising for it, I've messed up. Bell right. We have been playing bell right. Not bell wrong bell bell right. Yes. one word if anyone wants to look it up on Steam. For those who haven't come across it, is a base management RPG light meant to be sort co-op base. You can do it single player but I think it works best as a co-op. The idea being that you as your characters are trying to start a rebellion against the king, against the local lord and to do so you have to gain the trust of local villages, you to build your own village, hire other villages to come and help you build your settlement and you build a community of these settlers, can control, you know, make them workers, companions, guards and you can go off and fight bandits or you can get them to help build the town or gather resources. very well thought out game so if anyone likes that sort of genre please do find it on Steam it is excellent. Early access at the moment, we have got slightly addicted but yes what have you been doing recently Matthew because you currently have our saved game because it's not cross save, what have you been doing? Well, every time, every night you go, okay, well, one of us goes, it's time for bed. And we go, yes, okay, that makes sense. Night, night, night, night. And then I'm left with the save looking at me flirtatiously going, you had a few more things you wanted to sort out. And then I generally message you the next day going, I was on it for another three hours and I've done this. So you are limited in the sense of what you have is you have the system where on the game, every few days, your, your city gets raided as the bandits kind of see you're building a civilization. Civilization. burning a town and then they come for you. And that generally is usually my stopping point because I get to the point where I go Scott, I need you to come back. So I've done a bit of reorganizing Scott. Hmm. What have you done? I, well, I built some nice weapon racks and then I moved all of the storage around. This is what it is. This game is, is if you are a micromanager. So I'm, I'm, I'm a paradox. I'd hate micromanaging, but I love setting up the process. So I will set up a process within an inch of its life of this is where I'm going to put my food. This is where I'm going to put my bricks. This is where I'm going to put my stone and then kind of going, right, everybody, you've got your instructions. I'll be back in 20 years and I, everything better be in the right place. So every time you leave me alone, I set up a new storage process. So that's what I've done now. And now we have a lovely tool rack and a weapons rack because I've moved them all about. So the village has nowhere to go. And also I've noticed that Ernest is rubbish with a but rubbish with a he's got no he's got no potential Ernest. So again, background for anyone. That's better, I need to explain this. background, background, all of the villagers you get with attributes now, but they have caps. So you say you get one that has strength of one, but they might have a cap of five. So you go great. I can train this person up to be a brute and you go fantastic. Now we had a bloke called Ernest wielding a pitchfork in our army. I took a look at him last night. He's got strength of one and it's a maximum of one. So the man has, the man has jelly for arms. So he's been redistributed into the archers ranks. I've given him a bow. And then I realized that he didn't have the strength to wield the bow. So I've now essentially put him on a crash course of how to learn how to hold a bow. And that's it. And that's roughly what I've been up to. And then actually, and then I downloaded Warhammer Space Marine 2 last night. I Those two things are not necessarily related. But I have heard that it's an excellent game. My brother has it. He advocates it very highly. if anyone wants to play a sort of game where it's, I wouldn't say it's necessarily turn your mind off because there's quite a bit of sort of nuance to it. However, the game engine that is processing those 3D models on screen is incredible. It has this incredible trick of you look at it and you go, my goodness, we're gonna get swamped by a million enemies. There's hundreds of enemies on screen, but it's really clever that it only filters through a certain amount to you. So you you're like going, no, no, no, I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die. Oh, hang on. Only about five came through the only five came through the garrison. So you can take them out, but you don't it never feels like you're being cheated. So it's quite clever. Hmm, no, I like that. like that. But yes, if anyone is looking for a new game to play with a friend, we recommend, highly recommend, this podcast recommends... Give us an extra backing. some sort of stamp or something to say like, this is a gaming blender recommended game? the stamp of approval. doesn't... I tell you what there is, there is a game coming out soon, I'm just gonna... this is the last plug I'll do. There's a game coming out on Steam soon which is called The Precinct. So I have always loved the idea of a good cop video game because I think... think... think a police officer's job in a video game is actually quite good because you get rid of all the minutiae and you just catch baddies. So... It's, I think it's like a, I think it's an indie title, there's a demo on Steam if anyone wants to check it out, it's called The Precinct, the game, and it's set sort of like in the 1980s in the United States and yeah, so it's set in this of this, it's set in this era of like vice and drugs and crime and you start as a rookie police officer and... and drugs and crime, my. If anyone remembers the old GTA games where it used to be top down, it's very much like that. It's not completely bird's eye view, but it's almost bird's eye view. Yeah, isometric, isn't the word for that isometric? sure I'm not sure but anyway GTA 1 & 2 if anyone here play GTA 1 & 2 and mean to trap you in a box there of, do you know this word? Shut up, Matt, shut up. I don't know. But yeah, I'm gonna play the demo today and give it a try. I will report back on our next podcast to see the precinct is any good. to recommend something before actually playing it. Well, the reviews are excellent. all reviews are overwhelmingly positive for the demo. So, you know, it comes out on the 13th of May, if anyone's interested in a good cop game that comes out in a month or so. No prices as yet. However, I think we're ready now to jump into the actual game, the game that really matters, which is, course, the game that we create each week. Matthew, how are you feeling about your chances with your randomized generator? I feel like this can only go as well as it's gonna go. I mean, cheers. I mean, state the obvious. Yes, it will go how it's going to go. Yeah, well, if I'm not right, I'm not right. I'm willing to stand by my decisions. goodness sake right okay so what you have today your genre randomly generated is a one-on-one fighting game so for anyone who remembers the game Tekken or for more sort of younger younger well the yeah yeah I know but I know but you know most people are old school Tekken or Mortal Kombat injustice, those sorts of games. remember Mortal Kombat from all those years ago? Does anybody remember it? Su- Susan, do you remember Mortal Kombat? We used to do it between that and, you know, the war. I don't... I'm gonna... In a minute I'm gonna cross out one these mechanics and put dating sim. Do you want me to do that? Then be quiet. Okay, so you have a one on one fighting game. Your mechanics, however. First one is procedural generation. So... So those dates are gonna be... No, the first one is procedural generation, a la No Man's Sky, for example. So parts of the environment, or much of the environment is... randomly generated by the game engine. And you have physics. A physics based, procedurally generated, one on one fighting game. Which I don't think we've even come close to making something like that before. That's very niche. so let's go through this one by one. So one-on-one fighting game, a la those old games that you may have heard of like Call of Duty. I'm just trying to wind you up now. I know that didn't make any sense, but I'm just trying to wind you up. So yeah, so I think the problem with the is one-on-one fighters are usually very, very handcrafted in order to make sure, I'm just checking my phone to make sure. getting this right to make sure that they don't. Everything's in sync, essentially, because the ones you hear about that are the failures are the ones where it's like, and this character was broken and all the time it used to defeat everything. I mean, even even some of that Smash Bros, which is completely I know it's not one on one, but essentially it is a fighting game. Everything is very, very tightly designed to make sure that that character doesn't have a world and that character that character's got his pros and cons and whatever we the we the Wii Fit Trainer is the most powerful. Apparently that one was broken when it first came out. The Wii Fit Trainer was overpowered, which I found hilarious. And then you've obviously got procedural generation and physics. Procedural generation. portal for example is probably the best best example I also like, I like the physics ones. Like if I'm thinking of physics game, also think of games that make you laugh. That's like the first thing I think of. So like human fall flat is a classic where you've just got to get to the end of it. Got to get to the end of a, essentially a course and you will create a complete chaos by doing it. That's what I think of physics games. There's that game Chained Together as well which is very physics based yeah, I saw that advertised. was looking through things a while back. That looked janky as anything. It is, but yeah, that sort of idea. Not two genres and not a genre and two mechanics that would necessarily all go together. So I'm thinking one-on-one fighter. So this is where my head's at right now. Lunch. Right. No, I was just just saying that because I'm hungry. Do you remember the first Lego Star Wars game? It may not be the first or maybe like the original trilogy or the prequel trilogy, whichever one it is. No, but the one that I'm saying is the one that I'm talking about the bit I'm talking about came in the prequel trilogy. I can't remember when that one got released because it's episode three of the Star Wars films. When you are playing co-op with your matey. If you're playing two player and all of a sudden you have to play out the Anakin versus Obi-Wan fight as you were going through the level. So you keep fighting and then the level sort of is falling apart around you. And then you end up on a platform right at the end where you fight, but you kind of have to be running and always be moving. But at the same stage, you could be taking out each other, which at the time was hilarious. But I'm thinking of integrating that idea of if it's physics based. Is the level falling apart? Do you have to avoid something and kind of you're working together, but you actually just trying to make sure you need both of each other to get through the level. But if you can sabotage the other person, that's also good. So you're trying to balance it off. And then if you've got a setup like that, maybe you do do procedural generation to generate that level. If you've got quite a simple concept of this is falling apart. This is the physics, but you have to only one of you has to make the other end. Yeah. How do you do that? How do you do that? How do you rely on the other person, but also want to defeat them? I know, it's... When it came out I was like, ooh, that's a tricky one. And I'll be perfectly honest, I'm not sure. I'm genuinely not sure. other way you can do it, and this way means the procedural generation is more tricky, because I've essentially done one where there, where procedural generation is hard. Sorry, but the one I've done there is it makes the one-on-one fighter hard. The way you make the one-on-one fighter easier and the physics easier, but lose out on the procedural generation is if you do a Orford fighting one-on-one, but you react to what's happening on screen. If the things are falling, if like say the side side falling down, it can hit your character and hurt them. then that's difficult to get procedural generation in because you need very authored battlegrounds. I'm trying to think of a game where you could literally modular and it could be put together. Mmm. Hmm It's genuinely tricky. mean, so I'm trying to think of environments so procedure generation physics works well when you're in a sci-fi setting because Everything is on a much grander scale. So it helps with the procedure generation and there's naturally different physics within that environment as well One-on-one fighting You know, you can make it broader than that. So it doesn't have to be For example, it doesn't have to be like a Tekken replica where the only thing you do is one-on-one fighting. could be other elements to it as well. It's just the main thing is the one-on-one fighting. Go on. I assume you've played in Chartered 2. So in in Chartered 2, that's how have to say it because the 2 is really big in the title, the train crashes at one stage and you climb up the train. So I have an idea. This is quite this again, like me. This is a silly idea. Generally all the ideas I come up with are silly, but trainers crash, you're hanging over the precipice and you and another person, because you your fight caused the crash. And initially you're both hanging on for dear life onto the end of end carriage and you have to climb your way up to freedom. But without you want to, it's a race. So when I say fighter, you're kind of fighting the other person cause you can do these really small slaps on them. and try and make them lose their, essentially lose their hand, lose their handles, so lose their grip. And so the better grip you have, the more secure you have and the less you can be thwacked. So do you know getting over it with Benwick Foddy? So that is a physics based climbing game where it's really difficult. You play as one person and you're, you're just essentially swinging. But if you fall, we can go all the way back down to the start. Now that is what we're going to do. That is the physics nature of it. If you get, if you lose your balance, we're doing a quite literal, very, very almost simulation-less climbing control of hands, feet, everything like that. If you get slapped and you've got bad grip, according to the physics engine, you will fall all the way to the back of the train and have to recline your way back up. Now, procedural generation inside the train, yeah. So now the procedural generation is each carriage you go into has a different theme. And therefore every time you play it, you have different orders of carriages. So let's say just for the sake of jokes, this doesn't have to be the case. It's a circus train. So every time you got in, like if you went into the trapeze artist section, that'd be like, that's a really easy section because it's got all the things hanging low to climb your way up. Like it's got a net and it's got the handlebars and stuff. But then you go into the, then you go into the carriage that contains a lion and the lion's not particularly happy because the lion's been turned upside down. So the one-on-one fighting element is more of a slap, get back to the end, because it's a race to the finish. And then whoever gets there first, the rest of the train slides off. Maybe you have a timer counting down at the same time. feel like might be too light on the... I like it, I feel like it might be too light on the one-on-one fighting element. You might need to expand on that a bit more. So yeah, what you could do is if you did, but then only what you could do Scott is you could really, I just flick the microphone, my pen out of passion. there are, congratulations, well done. Speech, yes, all me. What you could do is, you know what I said, let's say, I'm gonna do the, I know we don't usually do this, but I'm gonna say the controls. R1, right hand, L1, sorry, R2, right foot, L1. left hand, L2, left foot, and as you reach up you grab. And the analog sticks maybe control the hand positioning or maybe the leg positioning, whichever button you've got. Whichever button you're holding down, your analog stick. Yep. Yep, yep. So what happens is that you don't need to grab a handhold. There will also be equipment flying around like a broken bar, maybe a sword from... from where they were doing it, circus performances. And you can, instead of grabbing onto one of the handholds, you can go, no, I want a weapon because I'm going to take out the guy. But in doing so, you're sacrificing grip, which is key. So in order to go on the attack, you get the choice of whether to grab weapons and then you can kick things at people and stuff like that. But you are sacrificing your grip and therefore making yourself more vulnerable if you decide to grab a weapon. Okay, I like that. But you could have things like... You could have other things like items and stuff like could see... Ooh look! A pair of adhesive gloves! exactly. could, could, could they be useful on my ascent up the train? Or and also you could vary it, you could, doesn't have to be a train climbing up. You could also have, let's say the Titanic sinking when the Titanic goes sideways and you're climbing your way up the side of the boat. It can almost be a joke that your main character is always in these situations with vertical buildings or whatever. So this is what I was gonna say once you'd fully expand on the train I was gonna say you can make this, you could do it on a plane. You could do it on plane that's in like, do know what mean, like a high airliner that's in like free fall and you could have like a short, do know what mean, you could have some stupid ones. camera. Person just going, but like looking really confused. You can just imagine a disaster and you can put it in that situation. could be a skyscraper slowly falling down or could be a plane, could be a train, it could be anything. And that would be quite......insanning, I think. Can you imagine the th- if you were playing, obviously you could play one on one, you could play this co-op or sorry not co-op, you could play this against each other versus, can you imagine the stress if you, of looking at your character going up and then just seeing the hand of someone else go on, come up and grab your foot? Yeah, that wouldn't be fun. Like, just, as in like just off screen. Like just a hand up here. And he yanks you back. Yanks you back. So I think maybe, just to add to the one on one fighting thing, maybe you can generate, I don't know how you would achieve this, maybe you can generate some sort of like, some sort of like move that you can, that is almost like a... almost like a one shot knock them off. That make sense? as in, could be that the way that you... Let's say you climb really well. let's say that as you climb, you could inbuilt a system whereby you can get into a rhythm. As you go up, you not only will climb faster if you manage to get into a good rhythm, but also you will generate what is essentially like a focus. You call it like a focus point, for example. Focus. Climbers focus! And then once you get to a certain point where you've built up enough rhythm, get this... you get whatever it is, this power up or whatever. And that enables you to do like a one time... until you generate it again, like a one time move, like almost like a... It could be something cool, like you let yourself drop just for a second so you can give them like a double kick in the face to knock them back and then grab back on again. Do know what mean? Like you could do something quite funny. that, but maybe you don't need that because if it's a physics based game score, you can develop that thing with because you're controlling the hands, legs and speed and things. Cause you can think he's directly below me right now. If I let go and I move my legs into the right position, cause you got control of your legs. I can do the kick myself. But maybe what you do is you have an element of, if you are the climber at the back in order to make sure it's not a dead game, you have the opportunity to develop climbers focus to get 10 % quicker than the person in front. because that encourages it. It's kind of similar to rubber banding in racing games to make sure it's always good. I know people have mixed emotions about this, but I think if it's a one-on-one fighter, you want the fighting. So you actually want the person to catch up. Yeah, that's true. I get a racing game you're trying to set like the quickest time, but this is, we're trying to sell this as a fighting game. That is its official genre. you want to, your advantage would always be the Anakin. Anakin, I have the high ground. Which means nothing. It doesn't mean, no, it doesn't mean anything. It does irritate me that, because it's that cut back to episode one where he's hanging on and people have edited it together when he's hanging on. And it's then him at the top going. I have the high ground. Are you ready for your narrative? Okay. You have underdog. Which is quite a standard one, but I think you can make it your own. This is just a dog following you constantly. But no, you have underdog. Obviously everyone knows what that means, they're not going to teach people to suck eggs about what that particular narrative means, but I think you can probably nuance that in a new way. we have, but we've also got to remember that we are doing a silly game in a sense. So this, this is for the one player. This is for the single player, because it would only make sense in single player. You play Barry. Barry, Barry, I moved on from Kiefer at least. Barry is, he's not had much skills in life. Like he's not particularly, he's not been a big fighter. I'm so kind of basing this on this film that's come out called The Amateur. It's come out. The amateur or the amateur? We're saying amateur very posh. it's a French word. That's why it's which comes to it comes from the word love. I know. Thank you very much. The the the Kermode Meo podcast. So so it's a so you play this guy who essentially he's been behind a desk and he doesn't really do much the only skill he's got a hobby or the weekends of climbing. And no one thinks he amounts to much because he's always out, he doesn't come socialize, he doesn't do much, he's always just climbing. And he keeps, and he gets asked, because he's very unassuming, he gets asked at one stage, look, we need you to make these important deliveries to these key areas of the world. Because you are, if we send someone important, actually, no, let's just say, let's go for the old cliche of all of our agents are compromised. We need you to step forward and make these deliveries, then no one will respect you. Respect you? No one will suspect you. That's a different thing. And when he's doing it, he gets targeted by this unnamed shadowy group who always trying to sabotage every position he's in. And as you go through the game, through your journey to drop this off, so that you start on a, you start on a train, then you move on to a boat, then you get on a plane, then finally, then you get onto it, then you try and meet up with your bosses in a skyscraper and each one those gets sabotaged and puts you in this position where all you can do to get out of the situation is climb. And your skills of your hobby come to the fore because the evil genius goes, you'll never get out of this situation, buddy. And I go, ah, well, you do not know that that was was was started off trying to be French. out of this situation. That was like French and Chinese at the same time. I quite enjoyed it. Franco-Chinese. Yeah, so everything he's got to do, he always has to climb. And then it's just a very simple, well, I say very simple, it's then that job of, he then delivers the messages and stuff like that. And then maybe it turns out the joke at the end is they're really, really unimportant documents, like it's a happy birthday card to the guy at the top. It's an internal governmental memo about please stop hanging around by the water cooler and if you don't need to print, don't print, we're running out of Who has printed a 90 page document? What is this? It's Toys R Us manual about a toy that you bought! Why have you printed this? Um, yes. I think that'll be quite funny. At end of the most physics based games are quite funny, generally. And I think it's a nice novel take on a one on one fighter that isn't really a one on one fighter. It kinda says it is and then it's kinda more about... climbing and kicking people. I just like the idea of swinging with a sword trying to tap your opponent essentially on the knuckles to make him fall. Yeah, I think we're quite good. Shall I sum up? You think of a name. Okay, Ladies and gentlemen. What we have there is a one-on-one fighting game with procedural generation and physics mechanics with an underdog narrative. You play Barry, an unassuming man of little ambition who works for, are we saying he works for like an intelligence organisation? generic. He works for generic intelligence organisation, insert name here. He is, as I said, very unassuming and so his bosses decide to use him to deliver packages and letters all around the world. However, the shadowy organisation that works against this intelligence organisation has singled Barry out and every single time that Barry attempts to make a delivery, he is sabotaged. He starts off on a train. No! The train derails and he hangs off the edge. He then goes, he then flies somewhere. No, the plane is in free fall! Etc, etc. Insert comical location that is falling down here. Barry, as it turns out, is an excellent amateur climber. And as all of these things crash and fall down... climber. I think that just makes you a climber. You said ex-amateur climber. I didn't mean that. He is an X... I meant to say excellent. He's an excellent amateur climber. And in all these situations, whatever it is, doesn't matter what it is, it's falling down and it's somehow vertical. So he must climb to safety. But there is always one of the members of the shadowy organisation trying to get him and climb after him and throw him off. And so in this climb... you have the opportunity through this procedurally generated environment to use your handholds and footholds, get into a nice rhythm, to you get an extra 10 % when you're hanging behind in an effort to catch up to your foe. You can punch and slap and kick as you get neck and neck in an effort to knock each other off. You can even jump, sacrificing your grip to grab weapons and items that you can use in your ascent. game is going to be called Matthew what? got three and I'm going up in various levels of ridiculousness. So the first one, the least ridiculous, is called vertical. Yes. which I think I can see on a box together. And the next one, uphill struggle. Yep. And the finally and the final one, is my favorite. The only way is up open brackets, baby close brackets. I think get rid of the brackets. What the only way is up baby? Well, they're the only way is up Baby, yeah, okay Maybe we have that play when you you know when you get that climate focus Maybe that music starts playing like in the radio wherever you are. So it's like the car stereo or the It's... The song, the song follows him everywhere. So, I know, I like that. So, ladies and gentlemen, that was The Only Way Is Up, baby. Coming to you, I see this... Do know what? Do you know what? I'm gonna say it, Karma. I think this could go... This could be on mobile as well. This could be on mobile as well. So, as much as that pains me... mobile, your mobile will automatically start playing the song the only way is up baby is just to freak you out. and you can't stop it. It will just play that song.
